Experiencing Stress is part of being alive. Small amounts of stress, such as meeting a challenge or deadline is good, it can lead to increased alertness, energy and productivity. When you become worried, fearful and anxious, your cortisol level rises. This rise stimulates a branch of the autonomic nervous system known as the sympathetic system. Your body shifts into a vigilant mode, ready, if needed to fight or run, the so-called fight-or-flight mode. The hormone level comes back down after the vigilance and tension ease.
However, a life of constant stress from common things like money, work, relationship problems, as well as overly-busy and hectic lifestyles, can result in you losing the ability to slow down which can leave you in a constant state of agitation and causes your cortisol level to rise and remain high, creating a kind of sympathetic overdrive in the body.
